  WORKSAFE SMART MOVE

teacher's guide . . .

WorkSafe Smart Move is a safety and health Internet resource package for years 10, 11 and 12 high school students undertaking work experience and work placements. It is designed to help students improve their knowledge and understanding of occupational safety and health matters before entering a workplace.

The main aim of WorkSafe Smart Move is to provide students with information about occupational safety and health hazards and laws and provide practical solutions to some common safety and health problems.

Employers provide students with valuable opportunities to gain experience in the workplace. It is important for students to understand that employers have responsibilities towards them and that they also have responsibilities towards the employer.

WorkSafe Smart Move is user-friendly and includes interactive student centred activities deigned to encourage flexible, self-paced learning. In line with the philosophy of the Curriculum Framework WorkSafe Smart Move encourages students to become self-motivated and confident in their approach to learning. It is particularly relevant for the increasing number of students undertaking courses where learning in the workplace is part of the curriculum.

Students are expected to work through a module, reading and studying the information under various topic headings, prior to undertaking the self assessment questions that follow.

The information in this Internet resource package is available in portable document format (PDF) to download from WorkSafe's Internet site. This allows teacher to print a photocopy master of any of the modules to use in class so students only need to complete the test online. The multiple-choice tests and certificates are NOT available in this format.

WORKSAFE SMART MOVE CONSISTS OF:

  • Curriculum Framework
This section indicates the Curriculum Framework outcomes that are relevant to WorkSafe Smart Move.

  • General Module
The General Module is designed mainly for year 10 students to introduce important facts about safety laws and common hazards. Students should complete the General Module before moving on to complete any of the industry modules.

  • Review Module
The Review Module allows year 11 and 12 students to refresh their memory before they complete one or more industry modules. The industry module tests contain some questions based on the information in the Review Module.

  • Industry Modules
Each of the industry modules contain more detailed information on the main hazards specific to each industry. The ten industry modules are:

Whilst it is expected that the industry modules will be accessed mainly by students in years 11 and 12, they can be completed as they become relevant to students' part-time work or work experience placement. If students in year 10 are eager to complete an industry module they can do so either in class time or out of class under their own initiative.

  • Multiple choice tests
There are separate tests for the General module and each industry module, to complete on the Internet. Each module contains several sections. Students should work through a module, reading and studying the information, before attempting a self-marking multiple choice test.

Before they start the questions, it is important for students to type their name on the computer screen exactly as they want it to appear on their certificate.

  • WorkSafe Smart Move certificates
There are certificates for the General Module and each industry module signed by the Minister for Consumer and Employment Protection that can be printed off the Internet when students answer at least 12 out of 16 questions correctly. The certificates recognise their understanding of basic occupational safety and health information and can be kept in their portfolio.

Tests and certificates are only available through the Internet.

  • Resources
Resources are provided as portable document format (PDF) files that can be printed from the Internet. Some activities are designed to complete in class with students and the students can do others individually.

  • Links
Direct links are provided to some relevant resources on WorkSafe's Internet site and to other Internet sites with occupational safety and health information and activities.
